The Rock is a prominent, popular commercial rock music radio station based in Auckland, New Zealand, that broadcasts rock music and entertainment programs to audiences across much of the country. It targets 25–44 with a male skew but has a significant female fan base. This radio station plays rock music and showcases up-and-coming New Zealand bands. The Rock plays a mix of classic rock, alternative rock, and modern rock music, ranging roughly from the 1980s to the present day. Known for its tagline “Taking the Piss Since ’91,” the station has a reputation for high-energy, often irreverent humor. Previously it was known as The Rock 500 since 1999; since before 2006, it has been called The Rock 1000. The station’s identity is heavily tied to its long-running shows and established “Rock Jocks.” It plays rock-genre music and showcases up-and-coming New Zealand bands.
