The station launched on 27 October 1981 as Radio West. In 1985 it merged with neighboring Wiltshire Radio and was rebranded as GWR FM Bristol, becoming part of the wider GWR Group. Heart Bristol merged with sister stations in Somerset and Bath to form Heart West Country.
